The Incredible Ascent of an Indian Mountaineer Without Both Legs on Mount Elbrus
In August 2021, Indian mountaineer Chitrasen Sahu, who is without both legs, fulfilled his lifelong dream. He succeeded in expedition of the highest point in Russia and Europe, Mount Elbrus. Chitrasen climbed the Elbrus, highest peak in Europe, together with the team of high-altitude guides from Makalu Extreme team.
The leader of the guide team is Oxana Morneva, a Russian woman. In 2012, Oxana suffered severe injuries during an ascent of the most challenging peak on our planet, Mount K2. A rockfall severed Oxana's safety rope, but she managed to stop the fall by sliding three hundred meters down a steep ice couloir. As a result of the fall, all the ligaments in one of her knees were completely torn. Oksana herself narrowly escaped becoming disabled. Since then, Oxana has viewed the dreams and aspirations of disabled individuals as her own.
Chitrasen chose the Makalu Extreme team for his Mount Elbrus Climbing Expedition precisely for this reason. Of course, all the manipulations and movements during the ascent of Elbrus were extremely difficult for him. During one of the acclimatization sessions, his prosthetics caused severe blisters on his legs. It was very challenging for Chitrasen to maintain his balance. Oksana spent the entire day walking on huge steps, where it was somewhat convenient for him to use his prosthetics. A bloody trail followed Chitrasen through the snow. But Chitrasen and the Makalu Extreme team decided not to give up on their ascent of Elbrus under any circumstances. Two super guides from the Makalu Extreme team accompanied Chitrasen on the summit assault. They tied Chitrasen between them and helped him with almost every step. With incredible effort, Chitrasen, along with the two guides, managed to ascend Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Russia and Europe. Chitrasen's ascent, from the day he arrived in Mineralnye Vody to his return to the village of Azau, took four days. Former professional mountaineer Chitrasen Sahu highly appreciated the work of the guides and the precise, almost military organization of the Mount Elbrus Climbing Expedition by the Makalu Extreme team. After returning to Azau, a village at the foot of Mount Elbrus, Chitrasen admitted that without his guides and the Makalu Extreme team, this ascent would have been impossible.
